MEET TIM

Cultivating the next generation of community leaders standing for equity and inclusion.

A resident of Columbia, Tim Lattimer was appointed to the Howard County Democratic Central Committee in February 2018.  He has worked at the intersection of environment and development at local, regional, and international levels in a career spanning more than three decades in both the public and private sectors.  A strong advocate for smart and sustainable development with a conscience, Tim co-facilitates the Howard County Indivisible chapter’s Environmental Action Team.  He also volunteers with other Maryland advocacy groups, including the “Maryland Leads on Climate” coalition and the Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry of Maryland.

Until October 2017, Tim served as a career diplomat with the U.S. Department of State for nearly 24 years.  From 2012 to 2016, he was Deputy Director and Acting Director of the State Department’s climate change office, where he was part of the team that concluded the landmark Paris Agreement on climate change in 2015.  He won the State Department’s prestigious 2016 “Frank E. Loy Award for Environmental Diplomacy,” which cited his “. . . extraordinary leadership in bringing environment to the core of U.S. diplomacy and delivering concrete results in the lead-up to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.”  Tim focused on environmental and economic development issues in earlier U.S. assignments, including the U.S. Mission to the UN in New York, as well as in overseas postings to Costa Rica, Panama, Peru, Argentina, and the Philippines.

Tim worked previously for ten years as a private sector environmental planner and project manager in Southern California.  He earned a B.A. in Economics and an M.S. in Environmental Studies, both from California State University, Fullerton.  Tim and his wife, Deborah Lattimer, have two children, one of whom is a Rouse Scholar at Howard Community College and the other is a junior at Long Reach High School.
